What is the appraiser looking for?
A door might open to a cupboard, a walk-in closet or another part of the home. Looking inside helps the appraiser understand the layout and account for the spaces being inspected. Storage and readily visible damage, such as a water stain, may also be noted.
Do make room for access
- Move boxes or furniture that block a door.
- Keep a clear route into the space.
- Explain a lock, sticking door or access problem.
- Share information about known damage and repairs.
No need for a showroom
- You do not need perfectly arranged clothes.
- You do not need to empty drawers or every shelf.
- You do not need to hide ordinary clutter.
Does a messy closet lower the value?
Ordinary clutter is different from damage to the property. A messy closet does not directly determine the appraised value, but blocked access can make a space harder to see or measure.
If part of the home cannot be accessed, mention it when arranging the appointment. That gives you time to discuss what is needed.
Prepare for your Newark appraisal
